The Slánský Trial of late 1952 is generally seen as emblematic of the history of the Czechoslovak Jews after the Second World War. It reveals the antisemitic nature of the Communist régime as well as the allegedly secular and leftist character of the Jews in the Bohemian Lands (or even in Czechoslovakia as a whole). In contrast to this image, the author explains why this perspective is misleading. She argues that more Jews were imprisoned for being opponents, real or imagined, of the Communist regime – former soldiers in the British or American armies, members of the political opposition, members of the so-called bourgeoisie, or people with contacts in the West – and that because of the postwar immigration of the Jews from east Slovakia and the former Subcarpathian Ruthenia a considerable part of the Jewish population of Bohemia and Moravia were now Orthodox. Moreover, from the perspective of the 1970s, the 1950s, despite the harsh antisemitic campaign related to the Slánský Trial, were remembered as years of lively Jewish communities with dozens of children in the synagogues thanks to the postwar baby boom. |
