Rozdělení této instituce na hospodářský a kulturní odbor předznamenalo významné propojení orientalistické práce – vydávání vědeckých monografií a prestižního periodika Archiv orientální, přednášky, výuka orientálních jazyků, budování vědecké knihovny, s prací hospodářské povahy – vytvoření exportní infrastruktury v Orientě, přednášky, budování hospodářské knihovny. |

The Oriental Institute was established in Prague in 1922, but did not enter actual research business until almost seven years later. Academic work as such (the publishing of monographs and of the prestigious journal Archiv orientální, giving lectures and lessons in Oriental languages or building-up a scientific library) co-existed with activities of a more economic nature, such as creating export infrastructure in the Orient, giving lectures, or building-up an economic library. Th is was refl ected in the names of both branches of the institute, i.e. the culture department and the economy department. The institute pursued these eff orts also during the Second World War, a period which marked an important role of the institute within Oriental studies in Czechoslovakia as a whole: Not only were Oriental studies, above all regarding modern Oriental languages, preserved even after the Nazi closure of universities in November 1939, but also the academic staff’s salaries were continued due to governmental subsidies to the institute. The present study focuses on two major topics. The first explains the status of the state-endorsed institute, methods of its operation, changes within the management staff as well as of the institute itself after 1945 and 1948, and how the main academic focus, i.e. establishing courses of modern Oriental languages, came to be determined. The second describes the career opportunities and strategies of the younger generation of academics who, having faced various difficult situations during the war, eventually managed to occupy senior posts in the institute. |
